Sacramento Depot's "Lunch Lizzie"

| To keep the hungry crowds at bay in quick, low cost fashion while awaiting trains at Sacramento, Southern Pacific once employed a lunch wagon - a "Lunch Lizzie" in SP parlance, because it was plopped on top of a Ford "Tin Lizzy" chassis.. It is unknown exactly for how long it was a fixture on the depot grounds, but the presence of horse drawn hacks in the photos suggests that Lizzy likely debuted at least ten years before notice of it appeared in the May, 1920 SP Bulletin. One wonders how many thousand of famished local train passengers awaiting connections plunked down their dimes and quarters on the counter over the years. | ||

California State Railroad Museum via Internet Archive provided the (unmodified) black & white image, while AI provided the theoretical colors version. The image from The Bulletin also rendered as Dark Olive. Note that the Railway Express sign has a deep green background, a it should be, indicating that the Lizzy undercounter paint may indeed be correct. The yellow/brown colorization on the top may not be spot-on shadewise, but is is nevertheless similar to The Bulletin results. This is certainly not authoritative, but Lizzy surely looks nice. |
